Creil et Montereau Confiture Pot, c. 1904–1920, France

A Creil et Montereau confiture pot dating from the early 20th century. Wares of this type are not particularly rare as French antiques, but this example has a character of its own. Over many years of use, the originally pale surface has developed an overall warm, beige-toned appearance, with staining and subtle variations in color across the vessel. These accumulated changes have become a distinctive patina — a quality that might quite literally be described as “made by time.”

The vessel is made of faïence fine, a refined earthenware developed to provide a smooth, pale body and a cleaner appearance than traditional earthenware. Unlike hard, highly vitrified porcelain, faïence fine is softer and more receptive to the visible effects of age and use. In an old vessel such as this, staining, wear, and subtle changes in the glazed surface can become an integral part of its appearance.

The manufactories of Creil and Montereau were united in 1840 and became one of the major producers of faïence fine tableware in France. The Creil factory closed in 1895, but production continued at Montereau and the name “Creil et Montereau” remained in use until 1920. This pot belongs to that final period of production under the combined name.

Condition & Kintsugi Repair

The pot had been broken into six large fragments, requiring extensive repair across much of the vessel. It was reassembled using natural urushi lacquer, and the repaired areas were finished with 23.2-karat gold powder.

The vessel shows staining and discoloration that appear to have developed through long-term use and age.

Fine scratches are present on the interior base and are likely traces of repeated practical use.
