Creil et Montereau Sucrier, Mid-19th Century, France

A mid-19th-century sucrier by Creil et Montereau, made in the white ceramic body known by the manufactory as porcelaine opaque.

Despite its name, porcelaine opaque was not true porcelain, but a dense and finely refined form of faïence fine. Creil et Montereau became one of the major French manufacturers of this type of tableware during the 19th century, producing objects for use in well-appointed domestic interiors and at the dining table.

As a refined earthenware rather than a hard, highly vitrified porcelain, faïence fine tends to retain the traces of use and age more readily. On this piece, small scratches, faint stains, and subtle variations in the white surface have accumulated over many years, creating the warm and attractive patina that is now one of the vessel’s most distinctive qualities.

Condition & Kintsugi Repair

As a refined earthenware rather than a hard porcelain, faïence fine is relatively susceptible to chipping and impact damage. On this sucrier, the finial on the lid had been completely lost, and there were four chips of varying sizes around the rim of the lid.

The missing finial was reconstructed using natural urushi lacquer, jinoko clay, and tonoko clay, then finished with 23.2-karat gold powder. Because the original form of the finial is unknown, its present shape was created through interpretation and may differ considerably from the original design.

The four chipped areas around the lid were repaired in the same manner and likewise finished with 23.2-karat gold powder.

The body of the sucrier is intact and has no structural damage. Its surface retains small scratches, stains, and other traces of long use characteristic of aged faïence fine.

Use & Care

Suitable for display as well as careful practical use.

As an old faïence fine vessel, it is more susceptible to impact than hard porcelain and should be handled with care during practical use.

If used, avoid microwave ovens, dishwashers, and prolonged soaking in water. Mild dishwashing detergent may be used. Wash gently by hand and dry thoroughly after use.
