Originally made as utilitarian vessels in Korea, examples of this type were later appreciated in Japan as tea bowls for their restrained forms and quiet variations in glaze and surface.

Condition & Kintsugi Repair

The bowl had been broken into six pieces: two large sections and four smaller fragments. A crack was also present in the largest fragment.

In conventional kintsugi, after the fragments are joined with urushi, losses and recessed seams are typically filled and leveled with urushi-based material, often incorporating tonoko clay, before gold or silver powder is applied to the surface.

In this repair, a different approach was used. Gold leaf was first applied within the recessed seams and areas of loss, and layers of translucent urushi were then built up over it. As a result, the gold remains partially visible beneath the lacquer, appearing intermittently through the darker surface rather than sitting directly on top.

The crack in the largest fragment was stabilized by allowing urushi to penetrate into it. It was then additionally reinforced with metal staples (kasugai).

Otherwise, the bowl is in good condition.

Dimensions
Diameter: 14.8–15.0 cm
Height: 8.2–8.5 cm
Foot diameter: 6.5 cm
Measurements are approximate.

Use & Care

Suitable for display as well as practical use as tableware or a matcha bowl.

If used, avoid microwave ovens, dishwashers, and prolonged soaking in water.
